Dental Implant BasicsA dental implant is a titanium root that replaces a missing tooth. Implants can be used to replace just one missing tooth, or you can use a set of dentures that are anchored into dental implants to restore an entire arch of missing teeth. The implant itself is typically made of titanium, and it is drilled into your jaw during oral surgery. Your bone, during the healing process, fuses with the titanium, effectively making the titanium a part of your jaw. Once the healing is complete, a fake tooth is then attached to the anchor, and most people will never be able to tell that you have a dental implant in place. The Dental Implant ProcessThe process of getting dental implants and healing takes several months to complete, but you are able to function normally during the majority of that time. You do have to be gentle with your anchors, called abutments, during their healing so you do not shift them out of place. You will need to have sufficient bone density and mass to be able to put the anchors into your jaw. If this is not the case due to losing that tooth some time ago, you have the option of a bone graft to try and help rebuild sufficient bone in the area. |
