You may have heard a lot of jokes about root canals, and it's easy to understand why. More than 40,000 root canals are performed each day across the United States.
At more than 15 root canals in a year, it is one of the most-performed and most important surgeries for dentists. Root canals are tooth savers; they help you keep your natural teeth for as long as possible. Here are some questions about root canals, and why they are so important.
Root Canals
When you get a cavity, it is the result of bacteria eating away at your tooth enamel. If you don't come in and get it checked, the bacteria will continue to eat away your tooth until it reaches your tooth pulp. The result of bacteria invading your tooth pulp is an infection and pain. You may find it hard to eat on that side of your mouth.
In order to save your tooth, the dentist will make an incision at the top of your tooth, and take out the infection. Once your tooth is free of the infection, the dentist will fill the tooth with an antibiotic and a filler to keep the tooth strong. The dentist will then crown the tooth in order to give it as much protection as possible.
