Pregnancy-Related Gum Disease - What to Expect and How to Manage It

This exciting time brings many changes to your body, including hormonal fluctuations that affect your oral health. One common concern during pregnancy is gum disease, also known as periodontal disease.

What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is an infection of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. It's caused by plaque, a sticky film that builds up on teeth and harbors bacteria. During pregnancy, hormonal changes increase your body's inflammatory response to plaque, making your gums more susceptible to infection and inflammation.

Symptoms of Pregnancy-Related Gum Disease

Here are some common symptoms to watch for:

•  Red, swollen, or tender gums
•  Bleeding gums while brushing or flossing
•  Bad breath
•  Loose teeth
•  Pus between teeth and gums

Why is Gum Disease a Concern?

Left untreated, gum disease can progress and lead to serious consequences, including:

•  Premature delivery
•  Low birth weight
•  Increased risk of preeclampsia, a pregnancy complication characterized by high blood pressure
•  Bone loss around teeth, which can eventually lead to tooth loss

Taking Charge of your Oral Health

Fortunately, you can take steps to prevent and manage pregnancy-related gum disease.

Maintain Good Oral Hygiene: Brush your teeth at least twice a day for two minutes each time, and floss once a day. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.

Schedule Regular Dental Checkups: Visit your dentist for cleanings and checkups every trimester. This allows them to monitor your oral health and identify any potential problems early.

Dietary Modifications: Limit sugary and processed foods and opt for a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and low-fat protein.

Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your mouth moist and help prevent plaque buildup.

Restoration Options

In some cases, restoration treatments may be necessary to address damage caused by gum disease. Your dentist will discuss the best options for you based on your individual needs. These options may include:

•  Deep cleaning: Removes plaque and tartar buildup below the gum line.
•  Scaling and Root Planing: Removes plaque and rough spots on the tooth roots to promote healing.
•  Bone grafts: Replace bone lost to gum disease.
•  Dental implants: Replace missing teeth lost due to advanced gum disease.

Working Together for a Healthy Pregnancy

By taking these steps and working closely with your dentist, you can maintain good oral hygiene and minimize your risk of gum disease during pregnancy. Remember, a healthy mouth contributes to a healthy pregnancy and a happy, healthy future for you and your baby.
