The impact of aging on oral healthAs we age, our bodies undergo numerous and significant changes that affect our oral health. Some of the changes include enamel decay, gum diseases, and tooth loss. Pain and difficulties in eating, speaking, and performing our daily activities are some of the conditions that are related to age.

Facts about aging and oral health

As we grow old, our teeth become more prone to decay and dental issues. This might be caused by several things like changes in saliva production, medicinal drug side effects, and diet issues. Aged people are very susceptible to oral infections, eventually, it may cause tooth loss due to decay, diseases, or other issues.

Maintaining oral hygiene for the aged

Regardless of the demands, there are various ways aging people can maintain their oral health. Regular dental check-ups and tooth cleaning by oral practitioners are necessary for the elderly. Also, early detection is key to the treatment of these dental issues.

Elderly people should brush their teeth at least twice with fluoride toothpaste. They are advised to use a brush with soft and tender bristles since their gum might be damaged by hard bristles. They are also advised to floss and rinse their mouths with mouthwash to eliminate plaque and microorganisms in the teeth. A healthy diet is key for the elderly. Foods have low sugar content and nutritious foods that have calcium and Vitamin D, to keep their teeth and gums healthy.
