Diabetes And Your Teeth

Posted on 1/9/2023 by Amir Hosseini, DDS
Diabetes And Your TeethIn the United States, one in 10 Americans has either Type I or Type II diabetes. One in five Americans does not know they have diabetes.

Diabetes is a chronic disease, and it can affect many areas of your body. Interestingly, gum disease can make diabetes worse, and diabetes can make gum disease worse as well.

It is really important for you to visit your dentist regularly. Here is additional information about diabetes and your teeth.

How Diabetes Affects Gum Disease

Diabetes occurs when your body either doesn't produce enough insulin or doesn't produce any insulin at all. This makes it difficult to control your blood sugar levels, which leads to all sorts of problems in your body.

When you have diabetes, you have too much sugar in your system. Sugar is what the bacteria in your mouth feed on, which means it is more difficult to keep your teeth and gums healthy.

In fact, gum disease is one of the most serious problems for diabetics because of the level of sugar in the body. It is also extremely common for diabetics to have gum disease.

How Gum Disease Affects Diabetes

One of the major issues for diabetics with gum disease is the problems with managing blood sugar. Diabetes is a constant balance between the level of sugar and the level of insulin in your body.

Gum disease adds to the blood sugar levels in your body, which makes your levels extremely difficult to control. If you can't control your blood sugar, you will make your diabetes worse, which leads to other complications, such as heart disease, nerve damage, and kidney damage.
