Why You Cannot Have a Regular Dental Cleaning

Smiling person in a dental chair. Many people believe that a "dental cleaning" is simply a routine procedure to remove plaque and calculus (tartar) from the teeth. However, there is more to it than that. A dental cleaning is actually a comprehensive oral exam and treatment that can help prevent gum disease and other oral health problems.

While the term "dental cleaning" is commonly used, it's not entirely accurate. A more precise term is "periodontal maintenance," which reflects the focus on maintaining the health of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth.

Why Can't Everyone Have a Regular Dental Cleaning?

Not everyone can have a regular dental cleaning because the type of cleaning you need depends on the health of your gums. If you have healthy gums, you can usually have a routine cleaning every six months. However, if you have gum disease, you may need more frequent cleanings, sometimes as often as every three months.

Gum disease is a serious infection that can damage the gums and supporting bone. If left untreated, it can lead to tooth loss. The good news is that gum disease is preventable and treatable. With early diagnosis and treatment, you can keep your gums healthy and avoid serious complications.

What Happens During a Periodontal Cleaning?

A periodontal cleaning is similar to a regular dental cleaning, but it goes a bit deeper. The hygienist will use special instruments to remove plaque and calculus from below the gum line. They will also smooth out the roots of your teeth to make it more difficult for bacteria to accumulate.

In some cases, the hygienist may also apply medication to the gums to help control infection. They will also provide you with instructions on how to care for your teeth and gums at home.

How Often Should You Have a Periodontal Cleaning?

The frequency of your periodontal cleanings will depend on the severity of your gum disease. If you have mild gum disease, you may only need cleanings every three to four months. However, if you have severe gum disease, you may need cleanings as often as every two weeks.

Your periodontist will work with you to develop a treatment plan that is right for you. They will monitor your progress and adjust your cleaning schedule as needed.

What Can You Do to Keep Your Gums Healthy?

There are several things you can do to keep your gums healthy:

•  Brush your teeth twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste.
•  Floss daily to remove plaque and food particles from between your teeth.
•  See your periodontist for regular checkups and cleanings.
•  If you smoke, quit. Smoking is a major risk factor for gum disease.
•  Eat a healthy diet that includes plenty of fruits, vegetables, and whole grains.
•  Manage stress. Stress can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to gum disease.

By following these tips, you can help keep your gums healthy and potentially avoid the need for periodontal cleanings. However, if you do develop gum disease, don't hesitate to see your periodontist. With early diagnosis and treatment, you can keep your gums healthy and avoid serious complications.
