What To Expect During A Visit To A Periodontist

Posted on 12/19/2022 by Amir Hosseini, DDS
What To Expect During A Visit To A PeriodontistHave you been diagnosed with gum disease? You probably need to schedule an appointment with a periodontist near you. When periodontal disease is not treated as soon as it is diagnosed, it may result in teeth loss.

During a visit to a periodontist, a dental examination with be conducted and the specialist will add a note or two to your medical file. The dentist will look at your neck, head, and jaw for signs of temporomandibular joint disorder. Besides, the periodontist examines your mouth, throat, teeth, and gums. In some cases, X-rays may be done to determine any underlying bone loss.

What the Appointment is Like

When visiting a periodontist, you may be asked to fill in some forms before being taken to a periodontist. The specialist needs the form to interview you and determine what your treatment should be. You will be required to give information such as pre-existing health issues, medical history, daily lifestyle, dental issues you have had over time, and concerns about the available treatment option.

The information gathered during examination is critical in establishing a baseline and creating a detailed and customized treatment plan that is specific to your dental care needs. The dentist may recommend the treatments such as bone grafting, advanced periodontal treatment, or crown lengthening.

Other procedures may include tooth extraction, dental implants, gingival recontouring, and gum grafting or repositioning. After this, you and the periodontist will discuss the best treatment option and be scheduled for the next appointments.

Scheduling your Treatment Visits

Periodontal treatments are done at the periodontics and implantology office. Most treatment sessions range between 30 minutes to two hours. More advanced treatments that require surgical treatments may bar you from taking part in strenuous activities a few days after the treatment.

Most periodontal diseases are however treated using advanced laser technology. The treatment is painless and involves minimal post-treatment downtime. Contact us to gain a more understanding of our periodontal care and discover how we can be of help.
