What Does a Periodontal Maintenance Involve?

Posted on 12/10/2021 by Amir Hosseini, DDS
What Does a Periodontal Maintenance Involve? After undergoing periodontal surgery, it is crucial to take good care of your teeth until recovery. Also known as periodontal maintenance, maintaining good oral hygiene and a reliable diet is essential after periodontal surgery. Therefore, it is vital to understand what periodontal care involves and why it is crucial for your recovery.

Understanding Periodontal Maintenance

Just like regular teeth cleaning, periodontal maintenance involves removing tartar and harmful bacteria from your teeth. However, this procedure is slightly different from a standard, preventative oral cleaning. Periodontal maintenance is a form of treatment that is meant to fight off periodontal disease. Given that it is an advanced procedure, it involves both root planning and scaling. This means that tartar will be removed from the deepest parts of your gums and teeth.

When you come in for a periodontal maintenance appointment, our dentists will clean your mouth thoroughly, removing tartar buildup between your teeth and gums. They will also clean your entire teeth, getting rid of bacteria on any of your teeth. Furthermore, they will monitor the depth of the gum pockets in your gums and fix them using authorized antiseptic medications. This will get rid of any infections or inflammation in the gum pockets.

It is essential to note that periodontal maintenance only happens after you have been diagnosed with gum disease. You also must have been treated through scaling and root planning to undergo periodontal maintenance. Scaling and root planning are cleaning procedures we recommend every two to three months to keep your gums healthy. These procedures also help get rid of dangerous bacterial growth that might be caused by periodontal disease.

Therefore, it is essential to come in for periodontal maintenance if you have been diagnosed with periodontal disease. This will help improve the health of your gums. Contact us for more information on periodontal care.
