As a periodontist, I often use debridement as part of my treatment plans. It's an important procedure that can help improve your oral health and prevent further problems. In this article, I'll explain what debridement is, why it's important, and how it can benefit you.

What is Debridement?

Debridement is a deep cleaning procedure that removes plaque, calculus (tartar), and other harmful bacteria from your teeth and gums. It's done under local anesthesia to ensure your comfort.

There are two main types of debridement:

1. Root Surface Debridement: This type of debridement focuses on cleaning the surfaces of your teeth roots. It's important for treating gum disease (periodontal disease), which can damage the tissues that support your teeth.

2. Supragingival Debridement: This type of debridement focuses on cleaning the surfaces of your teeth above the gum line. It's often done as part of a regular dental cleaning.

Why is Debridement Important?

Debridement is important because it helps to:

•  Prevent gum disease: Plaque and calculus can build up on your teeth and irritate your gums. This can lead to gum disease, which can eventually damage the tissues that support your teeth. In severe cases, it can even lead to tooth loss.
•  Reduce inflammation: Debridement can help to reduce inflammation in your gums. This can help to improve your oral health and make your mouth feel more comfortable.
•  Improve the success of other dental treatments: If you need other dental treatments, such as fillings or crowns, debridement can help to improve the success of these treatments by ensuring that your mouth is healthy and free of infection.

What are the benefits of Debridement?

Debridement offers a number of benefits, including:

•  Improved oral health: Debridement can help to improve your oral health by removing plaque and calculus that can lead to gum disease.
•  Fresher breath: Debridement can help to improve your breath by removing odor-causing bacteria.
•  Reduced risk of tooth loss: By preventing gum disease, debridement can help to reduce your risk of tooth loss.
•  Improved appearance of your smile: Debridement can help to improve the appearance of your smile by removing stains and making your teeth look brighter.

How is Debridement performed?

Debridement is usually performed by a dental hygienist or a periodontist. The procedure is done in the following steps:

1~ The dental professional will examine your mouth and gums to determine the extent of your periodontal disease.
2~ They will then use special instruments to remove plaque, calculus, and other harmful bacteria from your teeth and gums.
3~ After the debridement is complete, they will polish your teeth to remove any remaining stains or roughness.

What to expect after debridement?

After debridement, you may experience some soreness or sensitivity in your gums. This is normal and should subside within a few days. Your dental professional will give you specific instructions on how to care for your mouth after debridement.

How often should I have debridement?

The frequency of debridement will vary depending on your individual needs. However, most people with healthy gums should have it done every six months. If you have periodontal disease, you may need to have it done more often.
