What Health Problems Can Periodontitis Cause?

However, it is crucial to recognize that maintaining good oral health is a significant part of this journey. Periodontitis, a form of gum disease, has been linked to various health issues, underscoring the importance of dental care in our overall health.

Heart Disease

The inflammation associated with gum disease has a direct correlation with an increased risk of heart disease and hypertension. Your cardiovascular system, being one of the most sensitive body systems, reacts to inflammation by increasing cholesterol and fats in the bloodstream. This can lead to atherosclerosis, a condition characterized by the narrowing of blood vessels, making it difficult for blood to flow as expected.

Increased Cancer Risk

A 2008 study of 48,375 men discovered a tell-tale pattern of tooth loss and cancer. The researchers involved in the study concluded that there was a close association between gum disease and the risk of cancer.

Another study involving more than 68,000 participants also showed a critical link between gum disease and pancreatic cancer. The bacteria that cause gum disease are said to produce a certain enzyme called Treponema denticola, which also commonly appears in tumors of the gastrointestinal system.

In the case of gum disease, Treponema denticola helps bacteria invade the gum tissues. Researchers also found out that these same enzymes activated other enzymes known to promote the growth of cancer cells.

Gums and Lungs

A study involving more than 1,380 participants showed a significant relationship between reduced respiratory function and chronic periodontitis. A reduction in respiratory function might be caused by inflamed passageways in the lungs, which make them narrower and unable to carry as much air as possible. The inflammation is associated with bacteria that find their way from the mouth to the lungs, triggering infections that lead to inflammations.
