Do E-Cigarettes Cause Periodontal Disease?

Posted on 5/1/2024 by Amir Hosseini, DDS

In any case, they have fewer toxic chemicals than those found in regular cigarettes. While electronic cigarettes are less harmful, they are not any different from regular cigarettes. They contain nicotine and other substances that can contribute to periodontitis and other health issues. Here is how electronic cigarettes can cause periodontitis and other oral problems.

Gum Inflammation

These cigarettes contain toxic substances and additives that have inflammatory effects. As such, extended use of e-cigarettes can impede the ability of the body to fight infections, increasing the risk of periodontitis.

Reduced Saliva

Saliva is essential in keeping your teeth clean and maintaining oral health. It supports digestion and washes away food particles from the mouth, reducing the escalation of bacterial growth. Smoking e-cigarettes can reduce saliva production, leading to a dry mouth. Reduced saliva flow triggers the growth of bacteria, increasing the likelihood of developing periodontitis and other oral issues.

Oral Cellular Damage

Your mouth has thousands of soft tissues around the gums, teeth, and cheeks. Smoking electronic cigarettes can cause cellular damage, increasing the chances of developing periodontal disease. Extended use of e-cigarettes inhibits the body from regenerating damaged cells, making you more vulnerable to gum disease.

Disrupted Oral Microbiome

Your oral cavity has loads of microorganisms, including bacteria and fungi. While most of these organisms are beneficial, others can be harmful. Whatever the case, the mouth has a way of balancing these microorganisms, ensuring they do not cause harm. However, smoking e-cigarettes can disrupt the oral microbiome, resulting in the development of periodontal disease.

Delayed Healing

If you already have gingivitis or mild gum disease, extended use of electronic cigarettes can delay healing after undergoing treatment. Electronic cigarettes contain nicotine that can interfere with the natural regeneration of damaged tissues and cells.
