How Long Does Periodontitis Last?

Early to moderate periodontal disease, in most cases, takes about 2 to 3 weeks to heal after you start the treatment and care. However, with severe periodontitis, the healing can take 5 to 8 weeks. Do Gums Grow Back After Periodontitis Treatment? Your gums will completely heal and take their standard form if you treat the disease earlier at the gingivitis stage. However, after this stage, the gum cannot grow back. Instead, your periodontist will perform preventative measures to stop the recession from worsening and surgery to tighten the tissues. Gum Restoration Surgery Options A periodontist will perform gum surgeries depending on your condition and preference. Here are the three surgery options to restore your gum: Flap Surgery Your periodontist will suggest flap surgery if your inner gum pockets have plaques, food particles, and other build-up. During the surgery, your gums will be lifted to expose all the build-up. The periodontist will do scaling and root planing, and finally, tighten the gum tissues and suture them back on. LANAP Laser Surgery Choose the Laser-Assisted New Attachment Protocol if you want a less invasive procedure that would not affect your daily activities. This procedure does not involve cutting the gum. Instead, a laser fiber is used to identify excessive pocket depths. The initial laser pass will remove the bacteria and the damaged tissues. Bone Graft Surgery The periodontist will suggest bone graft surgery if you have lost the gum and the jaw bone tissue. A bone from a deceased donor is placed on the jawbone.
