Centrifuge For Advanced Growth

Image of dental technology After a surgical procedure, your body goes to work healing itself. Your blood is filled with platelets, which help in the healing process. Not only do they help to form clots, but they also contain growth factors, which aid in the regeneration of new tissues. At Aesthetic Periodontal & Implant Specialists, we have taken advantage of technology that allows us to concentrate these platelets and growth factors and improve your healing experience.

Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a byproduct of the blood. It is derived from a small sample that we take right before your oral procedure. The sample is spun in a centrifuge, which separates the plasma from the blood. We separate out the plasma, which is spun again, concentrating the platelets within it. By doing so, we can gather anywhere from 3 to 5 times the normal amount of platelets in a very small sample. Once your procedure is over, the harvested platelets are smeared onto the surgical sites, acting as a bioactive bandage.

Uses for Platelet Rich Plasma

Platelet rich plasma has several different uses in the dental field:
•  Following gum recession, soft tissue grafts are often used to restore a natural gum line. It may also be used for other periodontal treatments.
•  Platelet rich plasma can be used following bone grafts for dental implants or following a sinus lift procedure. It can even be used following the implants themselves.
•  Bone repair, including following tooth extractions and cyst removal.
•  Facial reconstructive surgery.

Benefits of platelet rich plasma

•  No risk of rejection. It is your blood being used, so there is no risk of rejection.
•  Convenience. Your blood is drawn chairside, right before your procedure begins. The centrifuge spins the blood sample while your procedure is being performed, and the platelets are ready when you are finished.
•  Affordable. The sample is prepared in office. There is no need to send it off to a lab. This makes it more affordable.
•  Low risk of infection. The platelet rich plasma is like a bandage that seals out bacteria.
•  Faster healing. Because the platelets are concentrated, there are more growth factors within the sample. This allows your body to start to heal right away, and generate new tissue at a faster pace.

Platelet Rich Fibrin

Platelet-rich fibrin (PRF) is the next level of platelet rich plasma. After the first spin on the centrifuge, the middle layer of the blood is taken, which contains clotting factors, along with a significant amount of platelets. Once your procedure is done, and the byproduct placed over the surgical sites, a fibrin network forms. This network traps cytokines. Cytokines are proteins that send signals throughout your body and call for other cells to assemble at the surgical site, expediting healing.
